2023 WMA Best Masters Athlete Presentation

August 18, 2024, Gothenburg, Sweden
2023 Athlete of the year Paul Forbes

Paul Forbes, M67, GBR

Paul was shocked when he found out he was nominated for WMA Best Male Athlete. Surely there were many others more deserving. Being double World Indoor Champion and setting two outdoor world records in the competitive, M65 800m and 1500m clearly impressed the nominators and voters! Paul is striving to repeat as M65 800m and 1500m Champion here in Gothenburg. He had an excellent start by winning the 800m yesterday in spite of being the oldest runner in the finals. At the age of 67, Paul is continually adapting his training and life choices to ensure that he is not a victim of age marginalization. With such a strong profile, he feels that Masters Athletics provides a better awareness of the possibilities available to enhance the well-being and health of our older communities.

2023 Athlete of the year Sue McDonald

Sue McDonald, W60, USA

Sue was frustrated with how she was performing in 2022, so she made a wise decision – she fired herself as her coach. Her new coach’s and her goal was to set seven world records in 2024. She set her first world record in 800m the day after her 60th birthday which was during the WMA Indoor Championships. She changed her goal as the year progressed by taking on new events. The 9th world record she set in 2023 was in Steeplechase in mid-October. She set world records in 400m, 800m, 1500m, mile, 300m Hurdles, 2000m Steeplechase and Heptathlon. She has continued setting records in 2024. Will she take on new challenges to set world records in multiple events? WMA is now keeping records in women’s decathlon.
