Biography
Joe Appiah began athletics in his mid-20s after being encouraged to compete in a relay race following success in workplace football. He joined a local club and developed into a world-class hurdler, also competing in the long jump. His journey has included overcoming serious injuries and a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2021 before returning to elite competition.

Athletic Performance

Joe is a multiple World, European, and British Masters champion in sprint hurdles and holds four World Masters records. After his cancer recovery, he returned in 2022 and set a new World Masters record, reinforcing his status as one of the sport’s top Masters hurdlers. On 31st May of this year, he broke the M55 outdoor 100mH World Record.
Community Impact
Joe has more than 30 years of service to sport through coaching, mentoring, speaking, and leadership roles. He has supported young people through schools and clubs and has worked as coach, official, athlete representative, and event consultant. Following his recovery from cancer, he has become a strong advocate for prostate cancer awareness and healthy living. He was awarded an MBE in the 2026 New Year Honours for services to sport and public engagement.
