Obituary for Giuseppe Galfetti

In Memory of Giuseppe “Peppo” Galfetti (1931–2026)

The global masters athletics community mourns the passing of Giuseppe “Peppo” Galfetti , a true pioneer of Masters athletics and a respected leader whose vision and dedication helped shape the sport as we know it today. Peppo passed away peacefully at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy that spans generations and continents.

As a founding member and long‑standing treasurer of the European Veterans Athletics Association (EVAA)—now European Masters Athletics—Peppo played a pivotal role in building the organizational foundations of Masters athletics in Europe. His influence, however, extended far beyond regional boundaries. Through his close involvement with World Masters Athletics, his work helped strengthen international cooperation and contributed meaningfully to the global growth and stability of the Masters movement.

From his commitment to Swiss Masters Athletics to his service at the international level, Peppo was instrumental in ensuring that opportunities existed for athletes to remain active, competitive, and connected throughout their lives. His leadership was marked by integrity, discipline, and a deep respect for sport—qualities that earned him admiration across the Masters community.

Yet Peppo’s legacy is not defined solely by roles or titles. He was widely known for his sportsmanship, generosity, and quiet strength of character. As his family so beautifully expressed, his lifelong discipline and passion for sport were matched by a caring and loving nature that guided everything he did. To many, he was not only a leader, but a mentor, a colleague, and a friend. On behalf of World Masters Athletics and the global Masters Family, we extend our deepest condolences to Marco and Sandra, and to the entire Galfetti family. We share in your grief and honor the extraordinary life of a man whose dedication helped shape our movement.

Peppo Galfetti’s legacy lives on—in every championship contested, in every organization strengthened by his example, and in every athlete inspired to pursue excellence at any age.
