The city of Toruń, World Masters Athletics (WMA) and Polish Masters Athletics (PMA) are thrilled to announce that the 2023 WMA Indoor Championships will be held in Toruń, Poland! Masters Athletes, Members, Regions and WMA were disappointed that Athletics Alberta made the responsible decision to cancel the event in Edmonton. Subsequently, WMA was determined to find a replacement venue so the bidding process was reopened.

It is an immense challenge to stage a World Championship with this short preparation time. WMA thanks potential organizers representatives from several other member organisations for their interest and their willingness to work with us on this challenge. WMA looks forward to working with these partners on future Championships!

PMA and the city of Toruń can commit to a full WMA Championship plus offer a Mixed 4 x 200m Relay. Many of you have said how PMA and WMA produced an amazing Championship in 2019. Having successfully presented a Championship should give everyone confidence that it can be done again even with a much shorter preparation period. We are excited our team has another opportunity to exceed your expectations.

Toruń is one of the oldest and one of the most beautiful towns in Poland. It charms generation after generation with the beauty of its Gothic Old Town, which was entered onto the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Its night-time panorama, observed from the bridge or from the Vistula’s left bank, was considered one of the 7 wonders of Poland. Nicolaus Copernicus – the man who “stopped the Sun and moved Earth” – was born in Toruń. Since the Middle Ages the town was famous for its delicious gingerbread.

Nowadays Toruń has a population of over 200 thousand and 40 thousand students, learning at the Nicolaus Copernicus University and other higher schools. Cultural life is thriving – there are numerous festivals, concerts, exhibitions, performances…

The city boasts numerous modern sports facilities. The ARENA Sports Hall, with 5200 seats, is prominent among these. This very facility will house World Masters Athletics Championships Indoor from 26th of March to 1st April 2023. The hall is only a 20-minute walk away from the Old Town.

The city is very friendly and this is appreciated by tourists – every year over 2 million people visit Toruń. Numerous restaurants, serving Polish and other cuisines, cafes, bars and clubs, most of them within the Old Town, await them. Don’t hesitate and visit Toruń as well!
