On November 18, the contract for the 18th annual World Masters Mountain Running Championships was signed between the WMRA, Slovenian athletic federation and the LOC. The event for athletes ages 35 to 79, will be held in Zelezniki , Slovenia on Saturday, June 2, 2018.
The LOC, chaired by Mr. Brane CENCIC, has the experience of previously hosting an international mountain running event. In 2015, Zelezniki was the site of a WMRA World Cup race on almost the same track. The feedback from the event was positive with the participants enjoying not only the challenging true mountain running course, but the wonderful hospitality.
With a population of just over 3,000, this small town in Slovenia features architecture reminiscent of the 17th century and is located a mere 32 kilometers northwest from the capital city of Ljubljana. Area museums house exhibits related to ironworking, in which the town has a strong history. Another interesting fact, bobbin lace making is ever-present and there is even a school to learn this art.
CENCIC looks forward to welcoming the masters’ competitors and their family and friends to Zelezniki. “This opportunity to showcase our mountain running hospitality is one that we greatly embrace,” said Cenici. “We will offer a course that will challenge competitors and provide wonderful memories for each and every athlete and their supporters. Join us in June.”
